Sean Thorpe

Title: Associate Professor and Head of School of Computing and Information Technology, Jamaica

Dr Thorpe is the current President of the Jamaica Computer Society since February 2018 and a member of the board Jamaica Information Technology Services Alliance (JITSA). He holds PhD , M.Sc. and B.Sc. degrees in Information Security and Computer Science respectively from the University of Technology Jamaica (UTECH) since February 2013 ( as the University’s inaugural PhD graduate) ,University of Westminster, London, UK since in November 2002 and from the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus Jamaica since November 2000. He joined the University of Technology (UTECH) as a Lecturer in January 2003 with responsibility for teaching System Security at the undergraduate and graduate level.

Dr. Thorpe has worked extensively in the IT industry since 1995 as a Programmer Analyst and Database Administrator before joining academia. He is the 2009 recipient of the Fulbright Visiting faculty Scholarship award to Harvard University, where he explored collaborative research work in the area of Cyber Security at the Department of Computer Science. He is also the 2009 winner of the OOPSLA Educational Symposium Award for his innovative computer science teaching methods in secure object oriented programming techniques, and the 2011, 2012 and 2013 American National Science Foundation (NSF) awardee for Caribbean based research in the areas of Cloud Computing and Data Mining. His current research interests are information security, digital forensics, cloud computing, green computing and social media security. Dr.Thorpe has over 30 peer reviewed conference and journal articles all together published in the areas of information security, cloud computing and digital forensics since the start of his academic career.

He volunteers on several local and international IEEE and ACM program committees including performing the role as Program Chair for the well renowned IEEE Security and Privacy co-located workshop on Web Security and Privacy (W2SP 2015-2016) in Oakland California, USA. He also serves on several advisory boards in higher education institutions.  Dr Thorpe is a strong believer in youth engagement and empowerment through education.
